10 Special Qualities of People Who Don’t Feel Anxious

Dear Selfless Esteem,
I’m so anxious every day and basically all day. It seems like other people aren’t as anxious as me. What’s their secret?
Signed,
Abnormally Anxious
Dear Abnormally Anxious,
Everyone feels anxious periodically. In fact, a little anxiety naturally occurs as we encounter daily tasks like trying to catch a bus on time or driving through traffic. The problem is when it becomes overwhelming. 🫣
You described your anxiety as abnormal. For this reason, I advise you to get a physical examination to rule out medical causes, and the physician can make referrals to other professionals, such as a mental health therapist. (See “Why You Need To Get a Therapist ASAP” and “What Is Wise Counsel and Good Therapy?”)
In regard to your question about why some people are less anxious, here are 10 qualities they possess as well as Bible verses that support these traits.
1. They know their self-worth and can name their strengths (Psalm 139:14); therefore, they don’t feel inferior. (See “Why You Should Never Feel Ugly” and “Defeat Self-Criticism.”)
2. They don’t think anyone else is better than them (Romans 3:23). Consequently, they don’t feel intimidated by others. (See “Yes, You Can Stop Feeling Insecure! Here’s How.”)
3. They have faith in something. But if they place their trust in an earthly thing, e.g., a marriage, workplace, or government rather than God, they will eventually feel anxious (Matthew 7:24-27).
4. They have a strong support system (Galatians 6:2). This includes trustworthy family members and friends. If you’re hesitant to interact with others and build relationships, see “How To Handle Social Events Better.”

5. They encourage others and likewise surround themselves with positive people (Proverbs 12:25; Proverbs 15:4; Proverbs 16:24). (See “How To Stay Positive When You’re Having a Bad Day.”)
6. They have effective coping skills (Philippians 4:6-7). (See “Nurturing Yourself in Times of Stress: 14 Calming Techniques” by latoyarachelle.com and “6 Effective Ways To Manage Stress.”)
7. They stay in the present. In other words, they don’t dwell on the past or fear the future (Isaiah 43:19; Isaiah 41:10).
8. They hope for the best while preparing for the worst (John 16:33). (See “Finding Hope in Difficult Times.“)
9. They have self-control and anger management skills (2 Timothy 1:7; Psalm 37:8). (See “Top 5 Tips for Anger Management.”)
10. They believe God will help meet their needs (Philippians 4:19). (You may be interested in “How To Stop Worrying About Money.”)
That last one is referring to every single thing that concerns us. Jesus’ first miracle wasn’t raising someone from the dead, healing someone, or restoring sight to the blind. It was to spare someone the embarrassment of running out of wine at a wedding (John 2:1-11). Thus, we can ask Him to meet our needs, big and not-so-big (Matthew 6:11). (See “How To Pray in 5 Simple Steps” and “The Real Truth About God.”) Check out the beautiful lyrics of the song, “God I Look to You,” by Bethel Music and sung by Francesca Battistelli.
In closing, here’s an encouraging verse as we go about our day. “In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul” (Psalm 94:19). (─‿‿─)

That is a great song to serve as a reminder to always keep our eyes on Lord Jesus. I think this is a very good list for the topic, especially the support system, that is invaluable. So comforting, too, to know that even when we don’t have earthly, trustworthy family or friends, we have a Father in heaven and the best friend in Lord Jesus. 🙏🏽

Thanks so much for your comment; glory to God! 🙂 Yes, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).
